Boyd Street Brass is a 7 piece horn band based in Norman, OK. The group was formed in winter 2013, modeled after traditional New Orleans street bands. But they have developed a unique and diverse sound, blending funk, swing, Latin, and pop music. Boyd Street Brass performs a mix of instrumental and vocal tunes featuring Jay Wilkinson, including original songs by Jay as well as covers of other brass bands and popular songs. They have performed a wide variety of events, including jazz festivals, night clubs, parades, museums, weddings, holiday parties, sports events, restaurant openings, educational conferences, and schools. In April 2015, Boyd Street Brass released their debut album Sup Sucka, featuring 14 original songs. The most compelling aspect of this band is its members' wide range of professional experiences. Brian Dobbins, sousaphone, is the principal tuba player for the Fountain City Brass Band and the Norman Philharmonic. Dr. Jonathan Nichol, tenor saxophone, is a member of the internationally recognized H2 Quartet and was a member of the Jimmy Dorsey Band and the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra. Jay Wilkinson, trumpet/vocals/principal arranger, is a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra. Eric Walschap, bari/alto sax, and Daryl Nagode, trombone, come from successful local bands, Pidgin and Banana Seat. Brian Dailey, drum set, recently returned from performing on a well-known cruise line. These musicians have established themselves in the competitive world of music and have now come together to excite audiences with a mix of virtuosity, self-expression, and a little attitude.
